I don't think that there *is* a widespread familiarity with CSS syntax.
The Web intelligensia may be familiar with it, but most web pages don't
use it yet. Adopting the CSS syntax might be a good marketing move, but
I don't think that the installed base of CSS-knowledgable people is so
large that it is really useful as a pedagogic tool.
