There are more problems related to index-processing than just range-building. The documentation for the xindy index processor ( http://www.iti.informatik.th-darmstadt.de/xindy/ ) has a nice discussion of requirements for index-processing. One thing mentioned there of which I am not sure if it can be done in DSSSL at all is finding out if two location references (i.e page or secion numbers or similar) are immediate successors. This is no problem for two section numbers, but how can i determine if two page numbers are successors (where page numbers can be things like A-1, i, 11a, etc) ? Of course this question becomes only relevant if it is at all possible to do post-processing on the location references.
