There were some add-ins to author SGML documents from within MS-Word, but not so well integrated (imho) as with Corel WordPerfect 7 and 8. Microsoft had an add-in for MS-Word 6.c (or later) and for Word '95, called "SGML Author for Word". This add-in relied heavily on the use of styles to represent logical elements and _contexts_ within MS-Word. The preparation of an authoring environment for a specific DTD takes a more than considerable effort and the structured editing environment itself is far from being foolproof. It seems (unless I'm wrong) that extensions and add-ins to Word '97 have to be based on rather different mechanisms than the WLLs (in fact DLLs) with previous versions. The existing (32-bit) version of MS SGML Author doesn't work with Word '97. Is anybody aware of a new release ? I suppose some people at Interleaf or other refugees from Avalanche (which was behind the original development) should know about this. Another add-in is MicroStar's "Near & Far Author for Word", of which I don't know the exact status. It provided a better integration of SGML-related functionality than Microsoft's SGML Author. Finally, I know of Eric Van Herwijnen's TagWizard (NICE Technologies; listed under Delta Computers Ltd Oy in Steve Pepper's Whirlwind Guide), allowing to assist the author in tagging documents from within MS-Word. Here also, I'm not sure of the exact status. Only Microstar's product resembles to a certain degree to what WordPerfect is offering. The version(s) I have used tended to stress the PC to its extreme limits.
