The problem. I cannot see the periods at the end of an element

Pauls response, clarify then re-submit, was spot on!
Problem gone away.

(the problem was in the table of contents, which was
present (by the authors) and contained periods, but the output,
generated from the dsssl spec, created the contents from
the main body of text! That had no periods in it.

(Paul has obviously suffered from finger trouble before!)
