One way of ensuring that this sort of setup is done consistently would be to write a 'document setup' Word macro, which you routinely run on newly-created RTF files. Such a macro could also carry out the command sequence required to update cross-references within the document, and could indeed save the result as a 'proper' .DOC document if required. Richard.
