Never mind!  I just saw something in Paul Prescod's tutorial about 
processing particular children (section 4.5) which I think does what 
I need.  Although, I'm still a little unclear as to the function of 
the default element construction rule--is this simply the rule that 
is invoked at the top level in the absence of anything else that 
matches at the top?
