It isn't a common question, and it isn't dumb. I think that Jade 1.1 was
specifically designed to make this easier (there were some tweaks to the
FOT output). You could use that to build FOTs in some language other than
DSSSL,and use Jade to convert them to some RTF, MIF or TeX.
