If you use pdfTeX, you should be aware that its still under development, and be prepared to keep up to date with versions. I assume you are producing Cyrillic. my advice is to find Type 1 versions of Cyrillic fonts, and give up on the Metafont-sourced stuff. They are a dead end, IMHO.
