It's OK lists.sgm has <chapter> as top element and my catalog
has coresonding entry.
Moreover, jade 1.1.1 built on 

 SunOS tayphoon 5.5.1 Generic_103640-12 sun4m sparc SUNW,SPARCstation-20
 gcc version 2.7.2

works OK.
So it is problem with my gcc/libc/ versions :-(
