but the SGML backend is what is being used in this case, surely? the
punter wants to run the file, generating HTML, and a reference to a
GIF file. so
 <texmath>$x+y$</texmath>
should generate
 <img src="eqn516.gif">
and also write out "eqn516.eqn" for later processing before the HTML
file is viewed.

I bet I could add it to the TeX back end,r..... (if anyone can
think of a use in this context!)
