For Linux, I'd suggest 'convert', which is part of the very versatile ImageMagick suite. I've never tried it for PS, but in general it outputs very high-quality images (it also has excellent color reduction algorithms, if you need that). You use it like this: $ convert someimg.jpg someimg.ps That's all you have to do! You can also pipe the input and/or output if you want to. I don't have a URL for that, but it's widely used and should be available wherever you got your Linux distribution.
