The parsing is correct. That space is really part of the data of your document (unlike some other spaces, in other contexts). You can remove it in a DSSSL spec by using process-children-trim instead of process-children. You can debate with other users of the DocBook stylesheet whether the use of process-children instead of the -trim version is a bug or not...maybe some people want to start their paragraphs with whitespace.
