As mine has
	francais f8hyph.tex
	=french
that MUST be right. But why this TeX (Babel) message?
Ok, it seems the error must be elsewhere ... have I missed something?

Hmmm, this is obscure to non-LaTeXxies. I use only plain TeX.
Jadetex is also an introduction to LaTeX for me (interesting :-))!
