I don't know if this is standard or a jade extension but there is a node property "must-omit-end-tag?" on element nodes that is true if the end tag for the element must be omitted (not sure what that means exactly). You can use it as follows: ... (if (node-property "must-omit-end-tag?" (current-node)) (make empty-element ...)
