I'm using the RTF back-end and Word'97 with the Acrobat products to use DSSSL to generate PDF from an XML (or SGML) document.

Another option is using the TeX back-end to generate PDF.

I suspect Frame would also have a way of going to PDF using an Adobe product the way I do so with Word'97, so there would be another way of getting PDF.

To go *directly* to PDF using DSSSL, check out the commercial DSSSL engine named "DSSSLprint" from NextSolution in Japan:
