[jats-list] <etal> in <contrib-group>

I need to convert a large archive to JATS. One problem I have is that
many of the articles use an <etal>-like element (with content) to
substitute for a number of authors. In JATS, <etal> is allowed within
the <element-citation> and <mixed-citation> (and other) elements,
but not anwhere within <contrib-group>. I'm looking for suggestions
as to how to model this in JATS.

Thanks in advance,
Paul
