I think the best place to put that would be Book Identifier, as in:
  <book-id book-id-type="Dewey">523.46</book-id>

However, another possibility is to use <subj-group>, as in:
  <subj-group subj-group-type="Dewey">
     <subject>523.46</subject>
  </subject-group>

or even:

  <subj-group  subj-group-type="Dewey">
    <compound-subject>
      <compound-subject-part
       content-type="class-number">523.46</compound-subject-part>
      <compound-subject-part
       content-type="class-name">Saturn
      </compound-subject-part>
    </compound-subject>
  </subject-group>
