[Executive Summary: http://jats.nlm.nih.gov/extensions/bits/]

The Book Interchange Tag Suite (BITS) version 2.0 contains an XML model for
STM books that is based on the Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS; ANSI/NISO
Z39-96-2015) version 1.1. This is a non-backward-compatible update the the
BITS 1.0 version that was released in December 2013.

Suggestions and comments on version 1.0 were collected by the BITS Working
Group. Some of these that were applicable to journal articles as well as books
were fed back to the JATS Standing Committee and were incorporated into the
JATS 1.1 released January. Because BITS 2.0 is and extension of JATS 1.1,
these changes are in the current model. Those suggestions that were specific
to books only were incorporated directly into BITS 2.0.

BITS 2.0 is not backward-compatible with the BITS 1.0.

Most of the changes between BITS 1.0 and BITS 2.0 outside of those we
inherited from JATS 1.1 were from requests to allow elements in new places:

  *   add <contrib-group> to <fig> and <table-wrap>
  *   <attrib>, and permissions
  *   add <related-object> and <related-article> to <sec-meta>
  *   Add <ref-list> and <index> within <front-matter>
  *   Add <mixed-citation> within <attrib>
  *   Allow <sec> in <disp-quote>
  *   Allow <toc> within <app>

The backward-incompatible changes arose from cleaning up of the Question and
Answer model. If you use Questions and Answers in BITS 1.0, please take a
careful look at the new models in BITS 2.0.

A complete Tag Library is available here:

This schemas (DTD, XSD, RNG) and documentation are available by anonymous FTP:

Please send any suggestions to this list.

Thank you, and see you at JATS-Con
Jeff
