Yes, this conversion is both possible and simple.

<xsl:template match="recursiveSource">
 <flatTarget>
  ...
 </flatTarget>
 <xsl:apply-templates/>
</xsl:template>

(obviously if you wanted to keep the recursive structure you would put
the <xsl:apply-templates> *inside* the <flatTarget> element)
