There is a built-in template for elements that looks like this: <xsl:template match="*"> <xsl:apply-templates/> </xsl:template> You are overriding this template when you match "*". So all you need to do is put in an apply-templates: <xsl:template match="*"> <xsl:value-of select="name(.)"/> <xsl:apply-templates/> </xsl:template> You may also want to override the built-in template for text nodes: <xsl:template match="text()"/> And put line breaks and other formatting where you need them in the other template.
