Actually, this is an issue that may go beyond XHTML. Specs that use namespaces for versioning may have similar problems, as could various other uses of namespaces that change the namespace without necessarily changing the stylesheet or schema. XHTML is the most visible cause for concern, but not the only one. The www-style list has discussed this a few times: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-style/1999Aug/0013.html http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-style/1999Sep/0133.html I'm not sure we'll be able to get some kind of namespace mapping or wildcarding into XSLT 1.0, but it may well be worth considering.
