Xerces vs. Project X

I began using Sun's Project X parser last week. Then I came across Xerces &
Xalan from Apache when I was looking for a XSLT solution.

What's troubling me is all of the various solutions for implementing the XML
spec.. Not only is switching between products time-consuming but version
upgrades are like starting over.

Now that XML is moving to v2.0, I was hoping to not be bleeding so much and
that there would be some stable ground for v1.0 versions.

Enough of that. I'd like to settle on one set of solutions. Since I'm
quite happy with Xalan I'd like to use Xerces to replace Sun's Project X
parser (jaxp) but it's not clear how I can perform the same functionality.
It certainly seems more difficult. I simply want to create a DOM and then
save the tree into a string.

Has anyone done this with Xerces or has anyone converted from jaxp to
xerces.
I also understand the Sun is giving their parser code to Apache just like
everyone else -- sounds like Apache's the place to be.

Thanks
Tom
