aha... of course. The question still remains how to parameterise an 
XPath expression, something like the following will work:

<xsl:template match="tag">
	<xsl:variable name="name"><xsl:value-of 
select="@name"/></xsl:variable>
	<xsl:copy-of select="//Element[@name=$name]"/>
</xsl:template>
