ok - thanks for your input - i fear i lacked some experience - i will
use the root template match for my custom document and just include or
import the general templates for generic transformations - that's what i
was looking for

a general question: 

is there any material available on design patterns for xml/xslt ? kind
of what is available for object oriented problems (publisher -
subscriber)

No, you need to wrap the <html> element within

<xsl:template match="/">
<html>

</html>
</xsl:template>
