FOP fo:display-graphic how?

Has any one a working example on how to embed a GIF or JPEG file using FOP.

I tried various variants of this:

<fo:block><fo:display-graphic
href="file:/usr/local/src/jakarta-tomcat/webapps/samples/fo/cocoon.jpg"/></f
o:block>

including using the inline-graphic tag, using a http:// url instead of a
file:/ url, ...

I get various different results from a Cocoon stack trace, to a blank page
in the browser, to a page in the browser with a little icon in the top left
corner.

The fo examples (all without graphics) in Cocoon work fine. So I am pretty
confident it is not an installation issue.
