As a minor enhancement, if your table has borders or a
background, you may consider inserting a non-breaking
space (&#160;) when you do not output a line number:

     </td>
     </xsl:when>
     <xsl:otherwise>
     <td>&#160;</td>
     </xsl:otherwise>
