	<xsl:variable name="sVal" select='XXXXX'/>

that selects the value of a child element called XXXXX. If you want the
string you need <xsl:variable name="sVal" select='"XXXXX"'/> note the
extra quotes.

	<xsl:value-of select="xsl:alignLeft($sVal,10)"/>
you seem to have put your extension function in the xsl: namespace
that is not allowed you must put it in a different namespace (any will
do as long as its not th eXSL namespace.

Incidentally you can fairly easily pad your strings to 10 characters
without using an extension function.
