<xsl:variable name="sVal" select='XXXXX'/> that selects the value of a child element called XXXXX. If you want the string you need <xsl:variable name="sVal" select='"XXXXX"'/> note the extra quotes. <xsl:value-of select="xsl:alignLeft($sVal,10)"/> you seem to have put your extension function in the xsl: namespace that is not allowed you must put it in a different namespace (any will do as long as its not th eXSL namespace. Incidentally you can fairly easily pad your strings to 10 characters without using an extension function.
