Strange. I'm obviously using the wrong tools. Emacs has never 
inflicted such a horror on me, so I've clearly being living a sheltered

I suppose it would be too naive to ask why you'd want either
<p></p>This is some paragraph text
or
<p>&nbsp;</p>This is some paragraph text
rather than
<p>This is some paragraph text</p>
