You need to define what a hard return is (There is no such concept in
HTML). I think you mean a <br/> element.

In which case take the replace every newline character by a
<br/> element.

yes see the above page

so putting it together you just want
<xsl:template match="xxxx">

      <div width="...">
      <xsl:call-template name="substitute">
         <xsl:with-param name="string" select="." />
      </xsl:call-template>
      </div>
</xsl:template>



where the substitute template is defined in the page quoted above.
