Which can easily be dealt with (as Mark says) with, for example,

<xsl:template match="book//bookmark"> ... </xsl:template>

(matching any bookmark element but only if inside a book somewhere, not loose on the table).

And now that Kurt's reminded me, I do remember nested templates from early versions of the language: my guess is they came out in the wash when it was seen they don't really add anything, at the risk of confusing us (further) about the processing model.
