yes except top level elements need to be out of the null namespace, and
out of the xsl namespace, so you need your <island> to be in some other
namespace. But if you are just copying a chunk of stuff to the output,
isn't it easier to use a variable?

ie

<xsl:variable name="island">
 <island>
 ...
 </island>
</xsl:variable>
....

  <xsl:value-of select="$island"/>

  <xsl:value-of select="document('')/island"/>
If you do use document() you need ('')/xsl:stylesheet/my:island as the
"island" isn't at the top of the tree.

any namespace that isn't xsl or "no-namespace", yes this is in the
xslt spec. Often used for extension and/or documentation elements.
