<xsl:when test="$currentRowColor='#EFFFFF'"> $currentRowColor=#FFFFFF </xsl:when> firstly $currentRowColor=#FFFFFF doesn't assign anything to a variable it is just a text node and puts that text (along with some white space) into the attribute. To assign a value to a variable you use xsl:variable. But if you used an assignment here it would go out of scope at the end of the current element ie at the </xsl:when>. In any case you can not change th evalue of a variable once it is bound. If you are trying to make the colours alternate then just use the expression position() mod 2, there's an example doing this in the spec, and the faqs for this list.
