Lou,

Since the string value of an element node is defined as the concatenation of its text node descendants, your question doesn't really make much sense. The (string) value of an element node always includes the values of its children.

If, however, you're trying to get just text node children but not element children, you can try <xsl:value-of select="text()"/> to get the value of the first text node child. (The XPath expression 'text()' returns a set of text node children. The value of a node set is the value of the first node in the node set in document order.) Or to concatenate them, the cheap way is

<xsl:for-each select="text()">
  <xsl:value-of select="."/>
</xsl:for-each>

This will iterate over the text node children, skipping the others (element nodes, comments and PIs), and return their values in sequence. When serialized, this will come out as a string.

I hope that helps. If not, please post a bit of code to explain what you mean by the "value of the current node".

Cheers,
Wendell

How can I get an <xsl:value-of select="." /> to return only the value of the current node and not it's child node as well?
Thanks
