Well, there is a stand-alone command line version of Transformiix, and they at least attempted to implement d-o-e there. The embedding in mozilla of course does not serialize the result, it's the same as Xalan in Cocoon. The notes at the URL you gave resemble the ongiong discussions on this list about this topic rather closely.
