Count the number of preceding siblings:
count(preceding-siblings::elemB[@id="11"])

Yes, this is exactly right, it avoids that problem with position() I described in that other thread.


If you want it to work on any elemB, say

count(preceding-sibling::elemB[@id=current()/@id])
