Have you tried <xsl:copy-of select="$var"/>?


If you want nodes (i.e. those HTML elements, attributes, any text nodes containing data) in output, then don't turn it into a string, just copy it. (Nodes held in a variable actually constitute what's called a "Result Tree Fragment", which is designed to work just the way you want it, no stringifying necessary.)
