You're correct, it _does_ mean the parent of root, which doesn't exist. It's the "canonical" way of selecting an empty node-set. This is directly from the XSLT recommendation: http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt#variable-values By the way, it's not a pattern -- it's a location path. "/.." is not a legal match pattern.
