Actually, it's a bit more difficult than this, because in the structure below, node elements can appear under more than level of hierarchy. However, these should work: <xsl:variable name="previous-node" select="$current-node/preceding::node[1][ancestor::b//node[@current]]"/> <xsl:variable name="following-node" select="$current-node/following::node[1][ancestor::b//node[@current]]"/> The underlying logic is: Select the first preceding "node" element whose ancestor "b" contains the current node. If the current node is not in the same "b" element as the preceding one, it'll return an empty nodeset. HTH!
