Thanks, Wendell. I now have a much clearer picture of what I was 
trying to do and how to go about it. (And I now know what the 
difference between an entity and a character reference is and how to 
use encoding to either control xsl output or clue in browsers to read 
characters properly. I will probably not confuse entities and 
character references anytime in the near future.)
