It's another variant on the theme "my document contains [XML|HTML] markup which I have carefully hidden from the parser, how can I treat it as if it had been parsed normally". The best answer is not to hide it from the parser in the first place (i.e., don't wrap it in comments or CDATA). Second best is to use disable-output-escaping.
