No. You _are_ just getting the copyrght symbol but you are taking the default output encoding, utf8, in which this character has two bytes. If you look at the file in a system that doesn't understand utf8 then in general you will see rubbish, but coincidentally the copyright symbol appears as two bytes the second of which is teh same byte as used for copyright in latin1 encoding.
