The latter uses source document current node which is the root of the stylesheet. OK. Back to the drawing board. See the answer I gave on this list yesterday for toc's in FO (Re: XSL-List Digest V4 #1219) the basic idea is the same, to use generate-id()to make links you have to make sure your stylesheet current node is the same (the target) both when you put the id at the target and when you refer to the id when making the link.
