But you weren't using EXSLT's str:concat() function, you were using the
(unnamespaced) concat() function from the core library.

Then do what the guy showed you:

<xsl:variable name="x">
  <xsl:for-each select="y">
     <xsl:value-of select="."/>
  </
</
<xsl:variable name="z" select="string($x)"/>
