Not any other benefits that I can think of, but a benefit of <xsl:attribute> is the ability to include instructions (I've often used <xsl:number/> and <xsl:for-each/>) in the calculation of the value.


You only mentioned an attribute value template for creating an attribute and its value, but it is also very useful for specifying certain instruction attribute values (name and uri strings for result tree constructs, arguments for sorting, etc.).
