I would suggest that you just download saxon ( saxon.sourecforge.net ) and go through as many examples as possible, the architectural view will emerge with this intimate experience, deal with the axiomatic idiom of xml+xslt->xml parsing first, then layer from there....yes I know, if its hard to explain....then why....sometimes just doing is the quickest route between 2 points.

there are many 'grand' visions e.g. the architectural viewpoint you ask for, it depends on whom you are asking;for example those ( no offense ) older SGML'ers out there will no doubt have a document centric viewpoint ...or corba/dcom folk will no doubt be nodding their heads saying ahhhh SOA. 

One thing is certain, that xml and derived markups such as XSLT are an agent of change affecting said architectures.
