Ahh, but you only know that it won't have the string 'document' in it; you don't know whether it will have the string 'markup' in it. On the other hand, you can change: <xsl:call-template name="markup"> <xsl:with-param name="text" select="substring-before($text, 'markup')" /> </xsl:call-template> to: <xsl:value-of select="substring-before($text)" /> since you know that there won't be either 'document' or 'markup' in that string (but then you have to be careful during maintenance if you add another word to your list of replacements).
