Yes David, it absolutely works as you mentioned ! ... I need a value to
test and not just bolean true and false
That is not what my requirements are.

Therefore I get value at all the positions in separate variables 
Then I test them.

I give up

position()=last()-2='A'

is exactly the same test as

position()=last()-2='Wibble'

It does not test the string 'A' (only that the string is non empty) and
it does not test the content of any element.
