I would use identity template and include an empty override for non-empty ME elements:

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform";>
<xsl:template match="node()|@*">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="node()|@*"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="ME[not(node())]"/>
</xsl:stylesheet>

I have an xml file, and I want to strip all of tags with the node ME if they are empty.

<holder>
<a />
<b />
<ME />
<ME> keep </ME>
<c />
</holder>

to give :

<holder>
<a />
<b />
<ME> keep </ME>
<c />
</holder>
