    There's a slight difference in 2.0: match="//stone" will
    only match a stone element that belongs to a document tree.

Warning bells ring for me there Mike.
The thread on setting variables

<xsl:variable name="x" select="'Fred'"/>
vs
<xsl:variable name="x" >Fred</xsl:variable>

Is that the difference?
The latter creating a document tree, the former not?
