If you are outputting to html or xml (but not to text) then any character is able to be output in character data as the system can use character references you got Output character not available in this encoding (decimal 249) That's LATIN SMALL LETTER U WITH GRAVE So either you have this letter in an element or attribute _name_ in which case the error is correct: you can not output the file as latin1 (and it isn't html either) or you are using the text output method (so & # 2 4 9 ; isn't available) or there is a bug somewhere.
